This hand arose on BCL last night and hands like this have, in the past, occasioned much discussion over the right approach between myself and various partners. I guess the answer is that it is a matter for partnership agreement but I’m interested to know how others would bid.
Your partner opens 1S and your LH opponent overcalls 2H. You hold the hand below. What is your call?
I'm almost tempted to double. If LHO then raises, I'll be fairly confident that partner doesn't have much wasted in hearts and would bid game. If not, and partner makes a discouraging noise, I might content myself with a non-forcing 3S on this nine-loser hand.
I think I'd start with however I show a good raise in spades (presumably 3H). The only worry for me is that I can't make any attempt to show hard cards in the minors, but them In 4333 which is a pretty poor shape, but 95% of the time partner has 5 spades (unless you're playing 5cM in which case its 100%) so I think all the factors balanced out. I like Baz's idea, if partner is short in hearts, my hand is excellent for game.
